With sharp wit, IN ENGLISH, OF COURSE treats of a timely, larger issue: that native-speaking people sometimes underestimate the talents, dignity--and humor--of newcomers, often with preposterous results. It will resonate not only with the 24.8 million foreign-born people now living in the USA, but also with citizens of foreign ancestry.

Narrative Descriptor

Josephine, a street-smart city girl from Naples, Italy, has lived in the Bronx just long enough to understand some English.

When her teacher attempts to acclimate his new class by having them describe their foreign backgrounds (in English, of course), he misunderstands Josephine’s broken English so that she must call upon words from her baby brother’s picture books and upon charades that elicit helpful vocabulary prompts from the teacher. She finally tells a coherent--if uproarious--tale about her misadventures on a farm, and mutual admiration prevails.
